Why is the imagery used on a website so important?

When you’re designing a new website, there are a whole host of factors to think about – how will it look? What colours do you want to use? What will the content sound like?

When a web designer is planning your site, they will also carefully consider the imagery they use.

Whether you use stock services such as Unsplash or Shutterstock, or you hire a professional photographer to take your own, unique images, it’s essential that your imagery is high quality, professional, and suits the rest of the website, as well as your brand.

After all, as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words!

Here are just some of the reasons why imagery is an incredibly important part of web design.

Bring your products to life

If your business sells a product, the best way to illustrate them is via high quality images. Of course, the text is important too, but images will ensure you make the best possible first impression, bringing your products to life.

For ecommerce websites in particular, having high quality photos of products is essential for allowing potential customers to see in detail what the products look like.

Invoke emotion

Images are also a great way to trigger emotion (just think how you can feel looking through old photographs or at pictures of that destination you’ve wanting to visit). And emotion is a key player in sales conversions.

Improve conversions

Research has shown that images can help decrease your site’s bounce rate, increase confidence in your business, and encourage them to explore further before, hopefully, converting.

Improve SEO

Images will not only improve your users’ experience on your site, but they can also help to improve your rankings on search engines such as Google. Pages with images are typically ranked higher, and ensuring that your images have suitable alt-text (text that describes the images) will help with this too.

Social appeal

Images are incredibly powerful on social media and are proven to improve engagement. Having images of a similar style and quality on your website and your social media channels, this helps to reinforce your branding and professionalism.

Give the people what they want!

Ultimately, people like pictures. Just think how many images are uploaded to social media on a daily basis! Images capture attention straight away and will draw visitors into the key areas of your site.
